Peter Forbes, co-founder of the Vermont-based Center for Whole Communities, came to the Center for Earth Day. During his visit he spoke on "The Ties that Bind Human and Land" and led a day-long workshop on "Building Communities for a New Nation."

Sarah Susanka Speaks at the Center on the Not so Big Life

Bestselling author Sarah Susanka is a pioneer of the “not so big” movement, her books The Not So Big House and The Not So Big Life champion quality over quantity in our lives. Susanka offered a Colloquium keynote presentation and a Community Forum. Her presentations were jointly sponsored by the Center for the Environment and the college's Lilly Center for Vocation and Values.

Energy leader Amory Lovins invited the nearly 700 people who attended his presentation imagine a world where business leaders and the heads of governments have abandoned oil, coal and nuclear energy in favor of alternatives that cost less and work better.

EnviroMingle at the Blue Vine

“Green-minded” people gathered yesterday evening at the Blue Vine in downtown Salisbury for the first EnviroMingle© hosted by the Center for the Environment at Catawba College. “We wanted to bring together all the people who have worked as volunteers, who have given their time and money to support the Center’s activities,” said Executive Director John Wear. “We also wanted to bring together those who might want to learn more about our work.

Ugly Bug Ball 2009

Participants at the 4th annual Ugly Bug Ball enjoyed a farm-fresh dinner to the music of Paul Oakley and his Quartet and dancing to the Sweet Dreams Dance Band, a group that plays everything from beach and shag music to disco and pop. "Whether you wanted to dance, talk or just listen, there was be something for everyone," says John Wear, the Center's Executive Director.

Lester Brown, founder of Worldwatch Institute and called "one of the World's most influential thinkers" by the Washington Post. Came to the Center for the Environment to speak on his latest book: "Plan B 3.0: Mobilizing to Save Civilization."

Ugly Bug Ball 2008

More than 250 people celebrated the Center for the Environment’s past and upcoming initiatives Oct. 3, 2008, at the Third Annual Ugly Bug Ball. Participants combined a good time with a great cause. “The Ugly Bug Ball is always a fun and festive occasion,” says Margaret Lipe, Center Advisory Board member. “It’s one of the best balls that Salisbury has. Knowing that it supports the work of the Center makes it even better.”
