Center for the Environment at Catawba College
The Center for the Environment at Catawba College was founded in 1996 and serves as a national model for outreach and education. The Center conducts outreach programs in many environmental areas, including alternative energy, air and water quality, land preservation, sustainable development, local food and green building. Dr. John Wear, Executive Director, was named Conservationist of the Year in 2003 by the N.C. Governor’s Conservation Achievement Awards Program.
The Center frequently brings speakers whom are leaders in their fields of expertise to the community as a part of outreach and education efforts. Past speakers include Lester Brown, founder of Worldwatch Institute, Amory Lovins, co-founder of the Rocky Mountain Institute, Sarah Susanka, noted architect and author, and Ken Cook of the Environmental Working Group.
