To LEED Rating for Piedmont Players Theatre Catawba College senior Rachel Roberts is going to be up to her ears in construction waste this semester.
Through her internship, she will document the recycling and reuse of materials as Piedmont Players renovates a downtown Salisbury building and constructs a 250-seat theater. She landed the internship with the help of John Wear, director of the Center for the Environment.
Piedmont Players Resident Director Reid Leonard notes that the community theater company is trying to earn a silver rating in the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED certification. LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. The newly renovated facility will be one of the first LEED buildings in Rowan County.
An environmental science student from Knoxville, Tenn., Roberts has an interest in waste management. “We don’t think about it sitting in a landfill,” she says, “but when we throw it away, it doesn’t just disappear.” She notes that it is important to recycle and reuse because it helps to conserve resources.
