The Fifth Annual Ugly Bug Ball and Silent Auction, scheduled for Oct. 1 at the Center for the Environment facility on the Catawba College campus, will highlight the theme, “Stay Local, Go Green, Reuse, Recycle.”  It will feature a local farm-fresh dinner buffet as well as live music and dancing.

Marianna Swaim and Kim Etters, co-chairs of the Ugly Bug Ball Planning Committee, and the committee members have worked for months to ensure that the fifth anniversary event will be a gala occasion. “We are continuing our local theme,” Swaim says. “We are trying to challenge ourselves as well as everyone else to basically rethink our world and the way we use our resources. We want to be good stewards of our world and secure the future for those coming along.”

Proceeds from the event support the ongoing activities of the Center, value-added education for Catawba students and the Center’s outreach to the region, including the Campaign for Clean Air.

“I can promise you this year’s event will be a treat like no other,” Swaim says. “We are counting on our community to support it and come out on Friday, Oct. 1, ready for a great time of sharing with friends and appreciating our local resources.”

The event will feature local music, local food and a silent auction that features local business products and services as well as original art. “We’re passionate about the Center for the Environment and being good stewards of our world and supporting each other here locally,” Swaim says.

Elisa Alfieri, a 2007 Catawba College graduate, was involved with Center activities as an environmental studies minor when she was on campus, and she has stayed involved ever since. “No matter what your age, the Ugly Bug Ball is a really fun event,” she says. “Seeing the Center for the Environment building all decorated at night, having a nice meal with friends, supporting the Center – all this adds up to a great evening. Everybody has a good time at the Ugly Bug Ball.”
