Day after day, night after night, the massive oil spill in the Gulf dominates headlines. We learn about the impact it is having on wildlife, on the shoreline, on the fishing industry. We look for ways to stop it as we would a bleeding wound, but in truth stopping the bleeding is only treating the symptoms. We need to do more: We need to treat the cause.

Dr. Joe Poston led a group of 14 girls on a night walk at the preserve Monday, July 12, as part of the Catawba Conservation Camp.
Each girl wore a headlamp and several carried large nets as they prepared to leave from the Center for the Environment.

Devin Rodgers loves plants and finds value in working together for a common purpose. That’s what motivated him to help out with St. Luke Episcopal Church’s community garden last year – a project that was inspired in part by the Center for the Environment’s 2008 Faith, Spirituality & Environment Conference. The fact that the produce went to a local shelter for the homeless was an added bonus.
