Like everyone, I have been shaped by my experiences. My childhood days spent on my family’s farm in Rowan County helped direct me to a life devoted to educating others about our environment. That experience laid the foundation for my beliefs and for the creation of the Center for the Environment.

Mention air pollution and most people think cleaner auto exhausts and tighter controls on coal-fired power plants and smokestack industries. They think about state rules and federal regulations. Charlotte Mayor Pat McCrory thinks about those things, too. When he ponders how local governments, businesses and individuals can help reduce pollution, he also thinks about sidewalks and street grids, red lights and greenways, land-use plans and regional transit systems. In a talk kicking off the Clean Air Lecture Series at Catawba College, McCrory described how those things have a direct bearing on our air, our water and ultimately, the health of our local economy.

Fresh from his trip to the Super Bowl to pull for his home team, Charlotte Mayor Pat McCrory said don’t go there -- Houston, that is. The only land-use planning Houston employs is to make sure strip clubs are at least 500 feet away from schools. Otherwise, it’s a development free- for-all, a sprawling city congested with traffic, McCrory said.
