Ecological Preserve Different at Night

Dr. Joe Poston led a group of 14 girls on a night walk at the preserve Monday, July 12, as part of the Catawba Conservation Camp. Each girl wore a headlamp and several carried large nets as they prepared to leave from the Center for the Environment.

Devin Rodgers: Living Simply and Sustainably

Devin Rodgers loves plants and finds value in working together for a common purpose. That’s what motivated him to help out with St. Luke Episcopal Church’s community garden last year – a project that was inspired in part by the Center for the Environment’s 2008 Faith, Spirituality & Environment Conference. The fact that the produce went to a local shelter for the homeless was an added bonus.

Erin Blalock Models Environmental Stewardship

Actually, it was appropriate. The morning Catawba College senior Erin Blalock was to receive the 2010 Environmental Stewardship award, she was teaching high school students about composting and recycling. She was doing the very thing for which she was honored: inspiring others to be good stewards of the environment.

Center for Environment Guides Girl Scouts in Exploration of Environment

A scavenger hunt sent them into the Catawba College ecological preserve looking for insects and spiders and caterpillars. They identified maples and poplars and engaged in a Bug Crawl. They also learned about green buildings that are energy-efficient and health hazards related to poor air quality.
