A conservation leader who has been called “a national treasure” will be the featured speaker at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 22, at the Center for the Environment facility on the Catawba College campus. Peter Forbes, co-founder and executive director of the Center for Whole Communities in Vermont, is a writer, photographer, farmer, conservationist and student of the relationship between land and people. His topic will be “From Ecology to Community.”

The Fair is a family friendly outdoor event featuring over 100 exhibits on a wide range of environmental topics, sustainable solutions, and eco-friendly businesses. Also offered are children’s activities, entertainment, demonstrations, an all-natural food court and more. The Fair and parking are free.

The Center for the Environment is gathering community leaders and interested citizens from 3-5 p.m. on Tuesday, March 30, at the Center facility on the Catawba College campus to discuss a program called FarmerFresh. It is a “virtual” farmers’ market, which uses the Internet to connect farmers and other small-scale specialty food producers to customers.

Video - Clay Ballantine: Health Effects of Air Pollution

Dr. Clay Ballantine, an Asheville physician and nationally recognized expert on the health effects of air pollution, spoke as part of the Clean Air Initiatives lectures coordinated by Catawba College's Center for the Environment. Drawing on scores of medical studies showing the link between air pollution and respiratory ailments, Ballantine makes a solid case for making the reduction of air pollution a priority at local, state, and national levels.
