Charitable Remainder Trusts:

Establishing a charitable remainder trust with the Center for the Environment at Catawba College allows you – or someone you designate – to receive income from the trust for life or a period of time that you specify (not to exceed 20 years). At the end of the term, the remaining assets of the trust would be distributed to the Center for the Environment to honor your charitable intent.

By placing your assets in a charitable remainder trust, you receive a tax deduction for the present value of the contribution in the year in which the gift is made, or possibly up to five years thereafter.

There are two main types of charitable remainder trusts:
  1. Charitable Remainder Unitrust - As the donor, you would irrevocably transfer assets to the Center for the Environment at Catawba College, which would serve as trustee. The trust would then provide you or another beneficiary with distributions of variable income based on a fixed percentage of the value of the trust, based on an annual valuation of the trust principal. This type of payment can act as a hedge against inflation, since trust values usually rise over time. Upon the death of the last beneficiary or when the term of the agreement ends, the remainder assets are passed to the Center for the Environment at Catawba College.
  2. Charitable Remainder Annuity Trust - As the donor, you would irrevocably transfer assets to the Center for the Environment at Catawba College, which would serve as trustee. The trust would then provide you or another beneficiary with distributions of a fixed percentage of the initial valuation of the trust principal. Upon the death of the last beneficiary or when the term of the agreement ends, the remainder assets are passed to the Center for the Environment at Catawba College.
